Crow Wing County Jail Inmate Lookup

Crow Wing County Jail is the county's central adult detention facility and the place to start when looking up people held in local jail custody. The facility serves pretrial detainees, sentenced county inmates, report-to-jail admissions, program participants, and some immigration detainees housed locally under the ICE facility listing. A Crow Wing County Jail inmate search should begin with the county in-custody list, then move to jail contact, records requests, court tools, or state and federal locators when custody has shifted outside the local jail.

Crow Wing County Jail Overview

Crow Wing County Jail is operated by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office. The official facility address is 313 Laurel St, Brainerd, MN 56401, with jail phone 218-822-7050 and fax 218-822-7057. The jail is an adult county jail using a direct-supervision model. The jail is licensed by Minnesota for up to 276 inmates. Official county material describes the building as a 78,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2007 and is divided into five housing units. The same county page lists a gymnasium, full-service medical unit, library, computer lab, laundry, staffed kitchen, master control center, pre-book area, and booking area. Each housing unit has video visitation, telephones, television, gaming and dining tables, canteen or vending machines, a natural-light recreation area, and a classroom.

The jail sits in downtown Brainerd near the Crow Wing County Judicial Center and county government campus. Official sources did not publish a current average daily population for the jail in the reviewed text, so the facility's capacity and booking totals should not be mistaken for a live head count.

Crow Wing County Jail Capacity and Population

Published county and annual-report material gives useful facility scale but not a current ADP. The jail's licensed capacity is 276 inmates, with five housing units and 78,000 square feet of space. Annual reports list total bookings rather than a live population count: 2,579 bookings in 2024 and 2,316 bookings in 2025. The decline of 263 bookings is a booking-volume trend, not a daily census.

How to Look Up an Inmate at Crow Wing County Jail

For someone who may be in the Brainerd jail now, start with the Crow Wing County In Custody List. The roster is the county-jail current-custody channel. It is different from the Minnesota DOC Locator, which covers people committed to state corrections, and different from federal or immigration locator systems. If the person is not on the county list, call the jail, check records channels, and verify whether the person moved to another custody system.

  1. Open the county In Custody List and look for the person's name and booking or record number.
  2. Compare spelling, aliases, and recent name changes. The static capture did not show a dedicated name-search form.
  3. Call Crow Wing County Jail at 218-822-7050 if the list is unclear, if release may have happened recently, or if the person may be held for another agency.
  4. Use LENS and Minnesota Court Records Online for charge and court-file context.
  5. Use MNDOC, BOP, or ICE when the case points to state prison, federal custody, or immigration detention.

Visiting Someone at Crow Wing County Jail

Crow Wing County Jail uses non-contact video visitation through NCIC. Visitors create an NCIC account, provide valid government ID, and pass warrant and no-contact-order checks. A separate request is needed for each inmate, and the county says review can take up to 24 hours. Staff do not notify an inmate about an upcoming visit; it is the inmate's responsibility to be available and accept the visit.

Visits may be denied or suspended for lockdown, discipline, inappropriate conduct, nudity, sexual conversation, excessive cursing, safety issues, or when an inmate has not been arraigned or moved into a housing unit. On-site visitors should not bring food, beverages, cell phones, electronics, or personal items into visiting; lobby lockers are available for a fee.

Mail, Phone, Money, and Bail

Mail must use the jail's format and come through USPS. Legal mail is inspected in front of the inmate and is not read or censored. Outgoing legal mail is not searched. Softcover books must come directly from a publisher, supplier, or bookstore, and magazines or newspapers must be subscriptions in the inmate's name directly from the publisher. Restricted mail includes scented mail, glitter, stickers, Polaroids, clippings, blank stationery, inappropriate photos, contraband, and similar prohibited items.

Booking, Reporting, and Property

The jail includes a pre-book area and booking area. People enter custody through arrest, court order, transfer, or scheduled report-to-jail admission. Sentenced people reporting to serve time enter through the north door labeled "Inmate Release and Return," press the intercom, and use the north-side parking lot with posted spaces near the railroad tracks. The sentencing court controls the reporting date and time, and only the sentencing judge can change it after the proper motion.

All inmates are charged a $25 booking fee. Sentenced Crow Wing County inmates are charged a $25 Pay-for-Stay fee per day, billed at release. Sentenced inmates in custody 14 days or longer must have a Mantoux tuberculosis test with a $10 cost. STS participants have additional card and drug-test fees. Personal property is inventoried and stored; Work Release or STS participants may have three sets of clothing, and student materials are reviewed under the jail's school-contract process.

Medical and mental-health care begins at intake and continues through the jail clinic. The clinic provides routine medical and dental care, basic mental health care, and required minor office procedures. Prescription medication continuation is reviewed by the jail physician.

PREA, Programs, and ICE Listing

Crow Wing County Jail publishes PREA materials and states a zero-tolerance policy for sexual abuse and harassment. Reports can be made to jail administration during business hours at 218-822-7050, by calling the jail and asking for a shift supervisor, or by calling Sexual Assault Services at 218-828-0494 with the option to remain anonymous. The county's PREA annual statistics redact personal identifiers such as victim name, date of birth, sex, date reported, and reporting party.

The jail also supports Work Release, Sentence to Service, IMPACT Program references, inmate programs and services, library access, classroom space, tablet communication, and medical services. These programs do not change the basic lookup route: current local custody starts with the county list and the jail phone line, while sentenced state-prison custody belongs in the MNDOC system.

ICE lists Crow Wing County Jail as a detention facility at the same Brainerd address, and the ICE facility search result says detainee information can be requested by calling 218-822-7050 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. That listing does not create a separate immigration jail in Crow Wing County. For immigration case location and detention status, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator and facility confirmation.

From the 1917 Jail to the 2007 Facility

Crow Wing County's jail history gives the current facility local context. The 2025 Sheriff's annual report describes the old 1917 jail as one of the most modern jails in Minnesota for its time. It measured 50 by 100 feet, stood two stories high, and combined a twenty-cell jail in the back with the sheriff's residence in front. Its estimated value was $28,000.

Six sheriffs and their families lived in that residence between construction and 1962. The building later became home to the Crow Wing County Historical Society Museum in 1982. The Sheriff's Office moved into the current government-campus building in 1979, and the present jail opened in 2007. That history explains why Brainerd jail references may point to more than one era, even though today's adult custody operation centers on the modern Crow Wing County Jail at 313 Laurel Street.
